PEPPERCORN STEERS AND WARWICK HIGH SCHOOL

Showing at Royal Queensland Show 2006 A Peppercorn steer at Royal Queensland Show

Steer 420

Steer 513

Terry & Karen Pierce of Peppercorn Belted Galloway Stud Barrington sent two steers to Warwick High School in Queensland at the start of 2006. The Ag students prepared them for show, in hoof & hook competitions across Queensland, and learned the finer points of a Belted Galloway. The shows included Stanthorpe, Clifton, Inglewood, Rockhampton Beef Expo,Toowoomba and Warwick. They then finish up at the hoof & hook steer competition at the Royal Queensland Show, traditionally known as the Ekka.

The steers were broken in to the halter, washed, groomed and paraded, and well looked after by the students of Warwick High School.

The steers achieved a variety of placings, performing well in all shows. Carcass results from the Ekka were very pleasing. They yielded carcass weights of 243.4kg and 266.2kg and fetched $3.40 per kilo.

My thanks to the Warwick High School students and to John Barling the head of the Ag Department and Pat Flynn for the wonderful job done with the steers.

Peppercorn Stud helped sponsor the WHS students with Show Team shirts for the Ag students.
